Outdoor Kitchens

Hello John,

We have now lived in Spain for over a year, we are very happy with our villa but would really like to take full advantage of outdoor living and have an outdoor kitchen. Could you please advise us on what sort of considerations we should be thinking about in the design of an outdoor kitchen and possibly more importantly how much would we expect to pay you to build one.

Regards

Outdoor kitchens are meant to be fun; after all, you are outdoors enjoying the great Spanish weather and some great food too. However, in order for your outdoor kitchen to be successful you need to be smart in the planning stage. With this being said, here are some pointers that you should keep in mind.

Strategic Placement - your outdoor kitchen should be strategically placed in relation to the other elements that you already have within your property e.g. the pool, the terracing, outside dining areas etc. This is important because you need to have a natural flow of traffic.
Make sure that you have easy access between both the indoor and outdoor kitchens. Consider the poor old cook; try not to place the cook in an isolated area, away from all the fun. Think about your neighbours – restricting their view, or filling their home with smoke may not go down to well.

Recent trends - have been to recreate the feel of a traditional indoor kitchen outdoors. If this is your intention, then you will want to make sure that you have a fridge to keep the wine chilled, a sink, a food prep area, possibly an oven but to me the main essential is the barbecue. There are traditional charcoal barbecue, gas barbecues and now hybrids, a mix of the two. While they are more expensive, they are also more versatile. Electric grills/ovens are also available; you may reject this idea until you consider just how many more things this will allow you to cook outdoors.

The Price Tag – how long a piece of string – it depends on the space available and how ambitious you are but nothing in life is free and this is also true for your outdoor kitchen. My advice would be to take some time to think about the project, do your research, have a look around at what other people have done and mentally take a note of the faults with their design and positioning before you go ahead. Once you have a clearer idea of what your requirements are, I can then help you design your outdoor kitchen to fit your budget.
